Hi. Over the last couple years I’ve heard many claims that the iPhone mic is always listening, whether you think you’ve turned it “off” or not. People saying they had a conversation in a room about a topic and then they saw ads about that exact topic or thing, etc. Up until recently I’ve been somewhat skeptical. I have an iPhone and have taken what I thought was every possible precaution to limit the mic’s access, app by app. Obviously I disabled the “hey Siri” function globally, all the Siri suggestions options, and manually disabled the mic and Siri for every app. the only apps that show up under the “microphone” menu in settings are all disabled. I deleted the Facebook app from my phone completely as well as the Facebook messenger app years ago. I do have the Instagram app but I’ve never posted once on it and I have Siri and everything else disabled for it. Siri and search is completely disabled for the Safari app as well (the only app I use to browse the internet. And obviously we don’t have an Alexa or any of that other nonsense in the house and never will. So, the other today I was having a convo with my wife about joint pain in my lower back and literally within an hour I received a spam email out of nowhere with the subject line “joint” and some bs content about joint pain relief. I’ve seen some potentially concerning ads over the past years that may or may not correlate to things I’ve searched or discussed, but this is the first time it was absolutely, clearly, and in no uncertain terms terms directly related to a conversation I was having in my house. So my question is, if we are to believe that taking all the steps to painstaking disable the mic for Siri, ios, and every single app, why is the mic still listening? Pls lmk if im missing something glaringly obvious.Thanks. via /r/technology https://ift.tt/3ilSxZE
